Ghana Safari

Things to Do in Tamale

Tamale is the main hub for Northern Ghana and the gateway to Mole National Park. Use it to start or end your safari, or explore the city and region. Here’s a short travel guide and how to book tours and activities.

Travel guide

Tamale is Ghana’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Northern Region. Domestic flights from Accra make it the usual jumping-off point for Mole National Park, which is about 3–4 hours by road. Many visitors spend a night in Tamale before or after a Mole safari, or book a multi-day tour that includes transport from Tamale to Mole and back.

In and around Tamale you can visit the Central Market, the craft village at Kumbungu, and Larabanga (en route to Mole). For wildlife, the main activity is Mole: game drives and walking safaris. Book Mole safaris and transport in advance; a 4x4 or organised tour is recommended for the road to the park.
